As part of Fort Leonard Wood’s Holiday Block Leave, soldiers have been coming to Lebanon since 2019 to spend a day feeling welcomed, appreciated, and at home. The day started simply, with a fantastic breakfast at The Elm Street Eatery. From there, soldiers were greeted at the Cowan Civic Center by community members and public officials that lined the entrance, waving small American flags. Above it all, a firetruck lifted a giant American flag, setting the tone for the day.
Inside the Cowan Civic Center, the atmosphere was relaxed, but loud in the best way, and full of energy. There was a photo booth for fun and festive pictures. Live music, with a performance by Fat Mike and the Bartenders that kept the mood festive and upbeat. The auditorium had been transformed with a huge dirt track for go kart racing. Games and activities filled the building, and no one went hungry thanks to an amazing dinner provided by A Taste of Andy's.
I stopped by this event today, and what stood out most wasn’t just the food, the music, or the activities. It was the feeling in the room. It was neighbors showing up for people who serve, offering a day of normalcy and connection during the holidays.
Lebanon really showed up. And for a few hours, the Cowan Civic Center felt exactly like what it’s meant to be. A place where community comes together.
Events like Rock the Block matter because they remind soldiers that they are seen beyond their uniforms. They remind our community that gratitude doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it looks like a hot meal, a waved flag, a go-kart race, and a simple “we’re glad you’re here.”
Rock the Block is organized through a collaboration between Friends of the Fort and the City of Lebanon. It is a community led welcome event designed for one reason: to remind soldiers that their service matters, and that this town is grateful.
If it doesn’t feel like Christmas outside, you’re not imagining it. This week is shaping up to be unusually warm, with mild temperatures sticking around right through the holiday. Snow boots may stay in the closet this year.
