Lebanon, Mo. – Unofficial returns from yesterday’s special election show Lebanon voters rejected the proposed lodging-tax increase under RSMo 94.840. Turnout was very low, and “no” votes narrowly outpaced “yes” votes. Election officials will verify and certify the results today.
The measure would have raised the city’s transient-guest tax from the current 2.5 percent (set in 1999) to the 5 percent maximum allowed for fourth-class cities. All additional revenue was to be dedicated exclusively to tourism promotion: digital advertising campaigns, tradeshow participation, market-research studies and a refresh of the city’s tourism website, which has not been updated since 2018.
With the proposal defeated, Lebanon’s lodging-tax rate remains at 2.5 percent. No new tourism-promotion funds will be generated, so the planned marketing initiatives and website overhaul must be postponed or financed through the city’s general revenues. City staff intend to meet soon with local lodging operators and other stakeholders to explore alternative funding options for promoting Lebanon tourism.
