Public Hearing in Lebanon Gives Residents Rare Chance to Speak on Property Tax Reform

On Tuesday, July 30 at 5:30 PM, Missouri lawmakers will gather in Lebanon at the Wallace Building on Harwood Avenue to hear directly from the public about property tax. This isn’t just another meeting — it’s one of only four property tax reform hearings being held across the entire state.

Representative Melissa Schmidt is encouraging residents to show up and speak out. “We have a special committee on property tax reform that’s meeting in four locations across the state. And Lebanon was chosen as one of those locations,” she said.

The hearing comes after months of rising frustration over assessments and tax increases. The goal is simple: gather feedback from regular citizens before lawmakers start filing bills for the next session in November.

“This will be specific to property tax and the assessment process that… we’ve kind of heard in the news off and on,” Schmidt said. “We will make some decisions next session… so really just working to gather information from the public before we start doing those things.”

If you’re a homeowner, business owner, or anyone affected by rising property taxes, this is your chance to be heard. Decisions about how property is valued and taxed are made at the state level — and this is the moment lawmakers are asking for real input before they make those decisions.

“I just encourage my fellow neighbors to come, to bring your thoughts and your concerns to the committee,” Schmidt said. “My hope is that that will be productive and positive.”

Representative Jeff Knight is expected to attend along with 19 members of the state committee. City and county officials from surrounding areas have also been invited.

Lebanon Now will be there to cover it. If you’ve got something to say about your property taxes, this is the time.
