Pete Spencer recently completed his two-year follow-up scans after a battle with testicular cancer, and he is healthy. He sat down with Lebanon Now to share his story and encourage men to pay attention to their bodies.
Pete was 49 when he first felt a sharp, lingering pain that felt like he had been kicked. He assumed it was an injury, but after six weeks he saw his doctor. An ultrasound revealed a tumor, and days later surgeons removed his testicle. He never expected cancer, especially with no family history, but the biopsy confirmed it.

Treatment options were unclear. Different doctors offered different paths, including chemotherapy or major surgery. None inspired confidence until Pete and his wife, Maggie, found Dr. Lawrence Einhorn in Indianapolis, the leading specialist in testicular cancer. Dr. Einhorn gave him a direct and confident plan: a retroperitoneal lymph node dissection within three weeks and no chemotherapy needed.
The surgery was major. Surgeons removed 52 lymph nodes along the aorta and vena cava. Recovery took months, but today Pete has no lasting effects and lives cancer free.
The experience brought gratitude, perspective, and a push to change his lifestyle. He cut out refined sugar, paid more attention to his health, and learned the importance of asking questions and advocating for yourself. He says most men ignore warning signs until things get serious, and that attitude needs to change.
November is Men’s Health Awareness Month, and April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month. Pete will return for an episode of “MEN.” in April to share more of his journey.
In Pete’s words:
“Everybody check your balls. And if you check twice, great. Your health matters. A lot of people depend on you. Quit trying to man up so hard. Take care of yourself.”
