The Hughes Senior Center is staying busy this May with activities, meals, games, classes, and community events for local seniors. During this week’s Hughes News, Bob and Debbie shared updates on everything happening at the center, including upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and a look ahead at summer activities.

The center recently celebrated Cinco de Mayo with karaoke, games, and plenty of laughs. Debbie also announced plans are already underway for a July 16 carnival event, which may even include a dunk tank.
One of the major upcoming events is the Missouri Veterans Recognition War Medallion Ceremony happening May 18 at 9 a.m. at the Wallace Building in partnership with AUSA Fort Leonard Wood.
The center is also preparing for its indoor yard sale on May 21, with only a few vendor spaces remaining. Anyone interested in reserving a spot can contact the center directly at 417-532-3040.
Another popular upcoming event is the Aging Best Farmers Market Voucher Program on May 28. Appointments are encouraged and can be made by calling 573-540-0380.
In addition to special events, the center continues to offer regular meals, games, quilting, karaoke, painting classes, gospel music, dancing, and more throughout the week.
Monday, May 11, the Hughes Senior Center will serve sweet and sour chicken with fried rice, egg rolls, stir fry vegetables, and fruit for lunch.
The day will also include quilting at 9 a.m. and karaoke later in the day.
Tuesday, May 12, brunch will be served with scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, and fruit.
Activities for the day include Mahjong at 9 a.m. and bingo at noon.
Wednesday, May 13, lunch will feature glazed ham, sweet potatoes, California blend vegetables, a roll, and fruit.
The center will host Game Day at 10 a.m. followed by a painting class at noon.
Thursday, May 14, guests can enjoy meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, a hot roll, and fruit for lunch.
Activities include Mahjong at 9 a.m., gospel singing at 9:45 a.m., and bingo at noon.
Friday, May 15, lunch will include ham and beans, cornbread, spinach, pickled beets, and fruit.
The day will begin with Samba at 9 a.m., followed by the M&M contest winner announcement at 11:30 a.m. and the weekly music jam at 11:45 a.m. That evening, the center will host a dance at 7 p.m. featuring South 63 and McCoy.
