The conversation covered local news, Missouri politics, young people getting involved in campaigns, and the changing role of political parties over time. Bowles discussed his work as a political consultant, including campaign strategy, fundraising, signs, and helping candidates connect with voters.
A major part of the show focused on President Harry S. Truman ahead of his birthday. The group discussed Truman’s Missouri roots, his rise from local politics, his reputation for honesty, his failed business ventures, and his eventual role as one of the most consequential presidents in American history. Kenny Howe shared insight from his graduate research on Truman and the transition from Truman to Eisenhower.
The discussion also touched on Truman’s decision to end World War II, his integration of the military, his plainspoken personality, and how his reputation improved after leaving office. The guests noted that Truman’s post-presidency reflected his character, including his decision to return home to Independence, Missouri, without trying to profit from the office.
The show also highlighted several upcoming community events, including the Missouri Veterans War Medallion Ceremony on May 18 at the Wallace Building and Memorial Day services at Mount Rose.
Next week’s show will feature Lebanon Police Chief Jerry Harrison and Laclede County Sheriff Matt Frederick during Police Officer Memorial Week.
