The Early Childhood Center at Lebanon R-III School District is doing far more than preparing students for kindergarten academics. Its focus is on building a strong foundation for lifelong learning by supporting children and families from birth through age five.

One of the cornerstones of the program is Parents as Teachers, a nationally recognized initiative that serves families from pregnancy through kindergarten entry. Parent educators work directly with families through home or community visits, developmental screenings, and monthly group activities held both at the Early Childhood Center and at locations around the community. Families receive guidance on child development, hands-on learning activities, books for their children, and connections to community resources when needed.
At the Early Childhood Center itself, four-year-old students can enroll in either half-day or full-day preschool programs. Learning is play-based and designed to help children “learn how to do school” by building routines, independence, and social skills. A typical day includes family-style meals, circle time, hands-on learning centers, outdoor play, and themed instruction that blends early literacy, math, STEM, art, and social-emotional development. Everything in the building is intentionally designed to fit young learners, creating a welcoming and engaging environment where students feel comfortable and confident
Social and emotional growth is a major focus of the program. Students practice skills like sharing, collaboration, problem-solving, and self-regulation while also developing independence through everyday routines such as washing hands, lining up, and communicating needs. These experiences help children enter kindergarten not only academically ready, but emotionally prepared as well.
Transitions are handled with care for both students and parents. Staff members greet students daily at drop-off, build strong relationships with families, and maintain open communication throughout the year. As students prepare to move on to kindergarten, they visit their future school, meet staff, and experience a fun, welcoming introduction that helps ease anxiety and build excitement.
Pre-K screenings for the upcoming school year will be held March 23–25 for children who turn four before August 1. Families can sign up through the Lebanon R-III website and are encouraged to attend even if they are unsure about enrollment. Screenings offer families a clear picture of their child’s development and an opportunity to tour the facility, meet staff, and ask questions before making a decision.
The goal of the Early Childhood Center is simple: partner with families, meet children where they are, and give every student the strongest possible start to their educational journey.
