Bob and Debbie are back, bringing the latest updates from the Hughes Center coffee shop. Hughes News is made possible each week thanks to the continued support of Garner Smith Insurance and Phoenix Home Care and Hospice.

Recent Updates and Announcements

The recent quilt raffle was a big success, raising $319 in just over a week. Congratulations to Pam Odom, the winner of the quilt, and thank you to everyone who participated and supported the fundraiser.

A Valentine’s Day jelly bean guessing jar is now available at the center. Stop in and guess how many jelly bean hearts are in the jar for a chance to win a $15 Dairy Queen gift card.

King and Queen nominations are complete, and voting begins Monday. Voting is done using heart-shaped buckets with spare change, and all proceeds support the center. Winners will be announced on February 13.

AARP free tax preparation is available for individuals age 50 and older by appointment. To schedule, call 417-893-0049 and leave a message.

Live music is coming to the center on February 11 with the Boomer Brothers.

February also marks the start of the Hughes Center Olympics, kicking off with Balloon Volleyball. Events and prizes will continue throughout the month

Weekly Activities and Lunch Schedule

Monday, February 2
Activities include Quilting Club at 9:00 a.m., with this first Monday featuring the Coffee and Donut Roundtable at 9:00 a.m. in the coffee shop.

Lunch will include baked chicken with mac and cheese, green beans, salad, and fruit.

Tuesday
Activities include Mahjong at 9:00 a.m. and Bingo at noon.

Lunch will be a hot turkey and cheddar sandwich served with vegetable soup and fruit salad.

Wednesday
Activities include exercise class at 10:00 a.m., Bible study at 10:30 a.m., and the first Hughes Center Olympic event, Balloon Volleyball, at noon.

Lunch will feature sweet and sour meatballs served with rice, oriental vegetables, and mixed fruit.

Thursday
Activities include Mahjong at 9:00 a.m., gospel singing at 9:45 a.m., and Bingo at noon.

Lunch will be pulled pork on a bun with cheesy potato casserole and fruit.

Friday
Activities include Samba at 9:00 a.m., Music Jam at 11:45 a.m., and a Friday night dance at 7:00 p.m. with music by Lost Highway.

Lunch will include catfish with cornbread, pinto beans, coleslaw, and fruit, followed by Ice Cream Sundae Day.

Additional Information

Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a suggested donation of $5 for those age 50 and older and $7 for those under 50.

The Hughes Senior Center is located at 460 West Fifth Street in Lebanon, Missouri. For more information, call 417-532-3040.

Volunteers are always welcome and needed. Opportunities include helping in the kitchen, serving meals, assisting with activities, or filling in as needed. Stop by or call to learn how you can get involved.

Weather Reminder

The Hughes Senior Center follows local school closures. If schools are dismissed due to weather, the center will also be closed.

There is always something happening at the Hughes Senior Center, and everyone is invited to stop by, enjoy a meal, and be part of the family.
